Description:

Bombay Phenotype (hh or Oh)

  • Biological Markers: Lacks A, B, Rh, and the foundational H antigen; contains Anti-A, Anti-B, and Anti-H antibodies.

  • Bombay blood donor can give red blood cells to: Bombay Phenotype recipients.

  • Bombay blood receiver can receive red blood cells from: Bombay Phenotype donors only.

  • Plasma / Platelet Rule: Can give plasma to Bombay recipients, and can only receive plasma from Bombay donors.

  • Donor Insight: Because standard O-negative blood still carries the H antigen, a Bombay phenotype recipient will aggressively reject regular O-negative blood. Connecting Bombay donors through specialized registries saves lives during surgical emergencies.
