What are platelets?

    Short Answer

Platelets (also called thrombocytes) are tiny cell fragments in your blood that help stop bleeding by forming clots. They are produced in the bone marrow and have a lifespan of about 7–10 days.

A healthy person usually has a platelet count between 1.5 lakh and 4.5 lakh platelets per microlitre (µL) of blood.

When a blood vessel is injured, platelets gather at the site, stick together, and help prevent excessive bleeding.
