What is platelet donation?

    Short Answer

Platelet donation is a special type of blood donation called plateletpheresis.

    During the procedure:

    • Blood is collected from one arm.
    • An apheresis machine separates the platelets.
    • The remaining blood components (red cells and most plasma) are safely returned to your body.

Because your red blood cells are returned, your body recovers more quickly than after a whole blood donation.

A platelet donation usually provides many more platelets than can be obtained from one unit of whole blood.

❤️ Just one platelet donation can provide a powerful lifesaving treatment for patients who need it most.
